NSBE Mission:
To increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers that
excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the
community.
2007-2008 marked a
crucial milestone of achievements for our group and we are ready to
complete the mission that we have initiated headed toward the future
of 2008-2009!We are committed to Leadership,
student service, mentoring, tutoring, and the continuous strivings
towards academic excellence as individuals and a campus chapter. Our
acting president, Otis Watson III has given us a inspiring chapter
motto for this year to express what we are all about.
"Good is not
good enough, when greatness is possible!"
The EMU NSBE crew at EMU is
special place to be in Michigan because our chapter is housed in the
corridor of the Detroit automotive technological innovation center
of the world! Here in the "MOTOR CITY" we have been
privileged to be mentored and educated by professors with years of
experience in creating and bring engineering and technological
innovation to life!
Our
mission is housed with in the greatest Technology school in Michigan,
in our humble opinions, Sill Hall!
The next chapter in the continuing saga of EMU-NSBE is getting ready
to give you a great year of continued service and we want you to be
an active part of our mission for the 2007-2008 session of our
chapter! There are tons of things for
you to do this year and numerous ways that you can serve in NSBE so
why not join us today and take the personal challenge of self
development and service! We will strive to live
up to the calling of this motto and the mission and objectives set
by The National Society of Black Engineers by extending ourselves to
each other and extended community in a spirit of professionalism
and brotherhood.

Our meetings are conducted
in Sill Hall room 150 and 152!

NATIONAL SOCIETY
OF BLACK ENGINEERS
EMU CHAPTER HISTORY II |
In 2007 the torch was passed
to Otis Watson III to lead the EMU Chapter!

Hello EMU CHAPTER members and
Family,
My name is Otis Watson III. I am honored and humbled by my
appointment to serve as your 2007-2008 President of The National Society
of Black Engineers Chapter at Eastern Michigan University . I
stand before you as an EMU alumni member and current EMU graduate
student in the College of Technology among other things, charged
with a spirit of service and commitment.
I was recommended and elected to this post because of my years of
community service, my back ground as an entrepreneur, my passion and
commitment as a scientist ,current engineering graduate student,
and my deep love and respect for my alma mater, Eastern Michigan
University! Along with the goals of my post, we as an
organization plan to be of service as community leaders , mentors,
tutors, and friends. While the nucleus of our mission starts
at EMU its scope and focus will always be extended to the greater
community at large!
We will conduct NSBE business with the utmost respect for the
organization. It is also our intention as an organization to
instill a sense of passion and motivation in all members and future
members so that we may continually excel and grow both personally
and professionally.
In NSBE, we are advancing a cultural paradigm that inspires the
Black community to achieve greater engineering and scientific feats
that will contribute in the positive progression in the following
areas as science, engineering , and mathematics. NSBE has set the
standard of excellence in providing developmental services to
engineering, science and mathematics students. We will
maximize our potential collectively to facilitate the development of
accomplished engineers for the betterment of our extended community,
our society, and our world.
This year our
organization will carry out the heart of the NSBE mission at EMU to
lead by example in all that we do so as to inspire creativity
and enthusiasm in our local community and the greater society
abroad. We pledge to do this all while maintaining an atmosphere of
responsibility, truth, honor, and excellence in keeping with the
organization's goals and mission statements.
Brotherhood, family,
community service, academic excellence, and increased representation
in mathematics, science, and engineering is our goal and our
mission!

NATIONAL SOCIETY
OF BLACK ENGINEERS EMU CHAPTER HISTORY |
Mr. Randall C. Woodard, already a member of N.S.B.E. and regular
attendee of the neighboring University of Michigan (Ann Arbor)
chapter meetings, with clear purposes in mind set out to establish a
chapter of N.S.B.E. at Eastern Michigan University. The Eastern
Michigan University (EMU) Chapter of the National Society of Black
Engineers (N.S.B.E.) was chartered by the national organization in
October of 2000 with fourteen (14) charter members, five (5) of
which held executive board positions.
The struggle was finding a way to get students involved with an
organization in which they never heard nor seen before on campus.
Members did everything within their power to promote N.S.B.E. to
technical and non-technical EMU students. Another challenge facing
the chapter at this time was the lack of recognition status by EMU
as a student organization on campus. Even when the chapter was
recognized by Campus Life as a student organization in January of
the Winter 2001 semester, struggles remained as members continued to
familiarize themselves with N.S.B.E. while learning how to take
advantage of all the resources now available to the chapter on
campus.
Subsequently, it was hard to promote the organization and
increase membership considerably during the charter year of the
chapter. Publicizing of events, meetings, fundraisers and
conferences was done primarily by word of mouth. Members would print
flyers at their jobs whenever possible in order to cut costs and
allow for the dissemination of N.S.B.E. information in a timely
fashion. Meetings were held in dorm rooms, while Resident Advisors
played an important role in promoting the organization to freshmen,
sophomore and other students on campus.
There were fourteen original chapter charter members who paved
the way for the establishment of the EMU Chapter of the National
Society of Black Engineers during the 2000 - 2001 Academic Year. Out
of the fourteen chapter founders, ten (10) were financial with the
national organization:
